Nick Emilio Trujillo, 89 years of age, passed away peacefully at his home in Delta, Colorado on April 23rd, 2025. He was surrounded by his extended family and friends at the time of his passing. Nick was born to Joe and Mary Trujillo in Wagon Mound, NM on July 8th, 1935. He moved to Delta with his family in early adolescence and made the area his home for the rest of his life. He volunteered for the Army during the Korean War and served until August of 1954. After his Army service, he returned to Delta where he met and married the love of his life, Eliria A. Salazar. They were married for 57 years until she preceded him in death in December, 2013.
Nick spent his early working years as an auto mechanic at various repair shops in the Delta area and he quickly became known as a man who could fix just about anything. His influence and love of all things automotive resulted in two of his grandchildren becoming “gear heads” as they followed in their grandfather’s footsteps. When Nick realized that he was getting too mature to continue crawling around under cars, he switched careers and became a correctional officer for the Colorado Department of Corrections. He worked at the Delta Correctional Facility for over 20 years where he was continually promoted into increasing roles of responsibility. He retired in June of 1997.
Nick loved fishing, hiking and exploring the Colorado high country with his family. He conveyed this passion to his next three generations including his sons, grandsons, and great grandchildren. His legacy is also exemplified in his teaching to those generations with the following: “Do your best, do the right thing, be a man of your word”. He will be greatly missed.
Nick is survived by three sons: Henry L. Trujillo (wife Marlene) of Milton, FL, Nick Trujillo (wife Patricia) of Morgantown, WV and Audie Trujillo of Grand Junction, CO. He is survived by four grandsons: Nathan Gilka (wife Ashley) of Delta, CO, Benjamin Trujillo of Parkersburg, WV,Aaron Trujillo of Kapolei, HI, Daniel Trujillo Morgantown, WV. He is also survived by great grandson Guren Gilka (8) and great granddaughter Nuri Gilka (1) of Delta.
A private memorial will be held by the family at a later date. He was the best Dad anyone could have asked for. He will be sorely missed by his three sons. God bless and keep you for eternity dad. We loved you.
