- Mitchel Lee Ammons November 22, 1938 – October 22, 2025 Mitchel “Mitch” Lee Ammons, age 86, passed away peacefully at his home in Cedaredge, Colorado, on October 22, 2025, following a four-year decline in health. His devoted wife of 25 years, Tina Ammons, was by his side. No formal services are planned at this time. A graveside memorial will be held at a later date at the family plot in Aransas Memorial Park Cemetery, Aransas Pass, Texas, with a Rockport Volunteer Fire Department sendoff. Close friends, family, and fellow firefighters will be invited to attend. Mr. Ammons was born on November 22, 1938, in Kenedy, Texas, to Thomas M. Hubbard Jr. and Romane L. Smith Hubbard. After his parents’ divorce, his mother married Victor Ceylon Ammons, who later adopted Mitch as his son. He was raised in Rockport, Texas, and graduated from Rockport High School in 1957. During his youth, he worked in the projection booth of the local movie theater, assisted at his grandfather’s service station, and helped in his parents’ floral and beauty shop. He also began volunteering with the Rockport Volunteer Fire Department, beginning a lifelong commitment to community service. Mr. Ammons married Elizabeth Wofford in 1957. Following high school, he attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi and later Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, majoring in Education. He supported himself through college by managing several local movie theaters. He began his career teaching automotive mechanics and drafting at the high school level in San Antonio, Texas, later joining St. Philip’s College as an administrator. In 1969, he was appointed Dean of Vocational Technical Education at Wharton County Junior College in Wharton, Texas. During his tenure, he expanded the department’s programs from six to twenty-six, including establishing the first dental hygiene program in the state of Texas. Mr. Ammons retired in 1980 at the age of 42 and returned to Rockport with his wife. He rejoined the Rockport Volunteer Fire Department, serving in multiple leadership roles, including 14 years as Fire Chief. Known for his fairness, dedication, and integrity, he earned great respect among his peers. Upon his retirement in 2005, he was honored as a life member of the department. After 42 years of marriage, Mr. Ammons lost his first wife, Elizabeth, to cancer in 1999. In 2000, he married Tina Rice. The couple moved to Cedaredge, Colorado, in 2005, where they built a custom home and established a 10-acre apple orchard. He referred to himself as a “gentleman apple farmer,” overseeing the operation while enjoying the quiet beauty of his surroundings. In later years, he spent his days engaged in the stock market until his health began to decline in 2021. Mr. Ammons is survived by his wife, Tina Ammons; children, Linda Ammons (Mark Pickens) of Coppell, Texas; Hannah Campbell of Cedaredge, Colorado; Desiree McLester of Rockport, Texas; and Corey Rehmer (Rebekah) of Battle Ground, Washington; seven grandchildren; and Joe Torres of Ingleside, Texas, his longtime mentoree whom he loved as a son. He is also survived by another daughter, two granddaughters, and four great-grandchildren, all of Bellville, Texas. Mr. Ammons will be remembered for his steadfast leadership, integrity, and deep devotion to family, friends, and community. His life stands as a testament to service, perseverance, and faith.
