Kathryn was born in Peoria, Illinois to Rolland and Hazel Saylor, where she spent her early childhood. The family moved to Colorado when she was eight years old, living in Commerce City and attending Adams City Schools. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior when she was 14 years old.
Kathryn became an accomplished musician, giving lessons at the Fillmore Auditorium for the Hawaiian Guitar. She was part of a 50’s country girls’ band with her sister-in-law Lila and cousin Ramona.
Kathryn married Steve, they lived in various Colorado mountain towns including Gunnison, Basalt, Golden, Silver Plume, Georgetown, Frisco and Idaho Springs all while raising 5 children. The Coats settled in Crawford in 1965 where they added 2 more children to the brood.
Kathy worked in the family restaurant with her mother Hazel and mother-in-law Bessie, where she became well known for her fabulous and famous cooking, especially her bread and cinnamon rolls. She later worked for 18 years as the lunchroom manager at the Crawford School.
Kathy loved going out on calls with her father-in-law Paul for his tow truck business and always said her mother-in-law Bessie was her best friend. After retiring, she traveled together with Steve and their weenie dogs (dachshunds) on RV adventures to various places. She was a member of Eastern Star. Kathy enjoyed reading, embroidery and sewing but most of all, she loved babies.
In her later years, the Coats settled in Delta, where she enjoyed her family to the fullest welcoming 19 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. In her home, friends and extended family were welcomed with love and affection. Kathy loved all and when suppertime came, she made sure that there was an extra plate for anyone. Kathy’s favorite saying was “The Lord will make it stretch, you don’t have to provide everything for everyone, but you offer food and water to anyone.” Kathy was an extraordinary woman and will be missed by many.
