Helmut (Hal) Wendler (1949–2026)

Hal Wendler, an accomplished welder and fabricator, proud veteran, and dedicated community servant, passed away April 1, 2026, surrounded by family. He was 76 years old.

Hal was born on April 9, 1949, in Ansbach, Germany, to Elly Sears. He moved to Cleo Springs, Oklahoma, at the age of six after Elly married Gerald Sears. A bright student, he graduated as the salutatorian of Aline-Cleo High School. On May 30, 1969, Hal entered the United States Army, proudly serving at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. An expert marksman, he competed with the Support Command Rifle Team, winning the competition in October 1970. Following his honorable discharge in 1972, Hal moved to South Fork, Colorado, where his parents had purchased the Foot Hills Lodge.

After working as a mechanic and a logger, Hal founded HW Welding. His skill as a fabricator became a literal part of the landscape; his craftsmanship remains visible throughout the San Luis Valley in the businesses, homes, and custom metalwork he built to last. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Hal was a diver, pilot, designer, and marksman who found his greatest joy in the company of friends and family. Whether through his business or his decades of service with the South Fork Volunteer Fire Department, Hal was the man his neighbors could always count on.

He is survived by his children, Joseph Phillips (Donna) and Michelle Baier (John); his grandchildren, Venessa, Lillie, and Liam; and his siblings, Rene Littrell (Bill), Curtis Sears (Carla), and Karen Swan, along with many nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Elly Sears.
