Harry Michael Wood

December 9, 1951 — December 24, 2025

Hotchkiss

Harry Michael Wood passed away at his home on Christmas Eve with his family and animals at his side. Mike, as he was known to many, was born to Harry Stubbs Wood Jr. and Agnes (Teddy) Garnet Wood in Delta on December 9th, 1951.

Mike lived on the family farm on Redlands Mesa (outside of Hotchkiss, Colorado) where his great uncle, Asbury White established his home in 1895 and where Mike’s grandfather, Harry Stubbs Wood homesteaded in 1906.

After many wild and unruly adventures that many of us experienced in our teens and early adult years, Mike settled into farming and raising cattle. He took great care in whatever he raised as he had the utmost respect for “mother earth”. Mike was of the old world. Even though he had to step into our new world, he always cherished and believed in the old way of doing business: a handshake sealed a deal; people followed through on what they said they would do; you pay what you owe; and you didn’t take another man’s water!

Mike’s family had a very long history on Redlands, having a grandfather who helped build the Overland Reservoir; served as a County Commissioner; drove one of the first cars up Leroux Creek Road; and established the family ranch. His father served in WWII, was captured by the Germans, held in a camp until escaping; and came home to continue ranching.

Mike respected the history of all those before him and always felt that he was more of that time period than of today. He enjoyed fishing on Leroux Creek, sitting and watching birds and other wildlife, rough caping, and special friends. Most of all, he loved being a part of his children’s lives and now their children’s lives.

Mike leaves behind his wife Elaine Leighton Wood, his children Nathan (Kristen) Wood and Samantha Wood McGowan, his grandchildren, Oliver McGowan, Declan Wood and Dax Wood. His nephews, Ronald Church and Dennis Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Judith Church, his brother-in-law Russell Church, and his son-in-law Sebastian McGowan.

Mike didn’t want a lot of hoopla. To honor his request, the family will wait until summer when friends of his can gather with the family to share great moments and memories.

In lieu of flowers please consider contributing to your favorite charity or to either Hope West or the Redlands Mesa Fire Department.
