Lifetime Delta Colorado resident, Doyle Atchley passed away on Saturday June 21, 2025, at home surrounded by his family. He was 84 years of age.
The internment will be at the Delta City Cemetery; a private service will be held for the family. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday June 28, 2025, at Grace Community Church Delta.
Doyle was born on May 5th, 1941, to Ben and Alta Atchley in Delta, CO. His early childhood and teen years were spent on the farm and ranch in Delta. He graduated from Delta High School with the class of 1960. He received the NHS all American football team award in the fall of 1959. He was also All State Football the same year.
On December 24, 1961, Doyle married his high school sweetheart Ellen (Pierson) Atchley. To this union three children were born. The couple celebrated 58 years of marriage before Ellen’s passing.
Doyle was a certified diesel mechanic for John Deere, White and Oliver. He was a professional truck driver for Ashton Trucking and Meadow Gold Dairies. Doyle was a farmer and a rancher.
Doyle served the city and county of Delta on the volunteer fire department for 28 years; he was Fire Chief for 6 of these years. He continued to serve as a board member after retiring from the department. He was a district one fire board member for 30 years.
Doyle enjoyed his family, his cattle, hunting for mule deer and elk, camping and fishing. He enjoyed gardening and restoring his collection of classic Farmall and John Deere Tractors. Most of his vacation time was spent doing these things or working on the ranch.
If someone asked Doyle how he was doing his usual reply would be “just a mildewing”. Some of his favorite sayings were “I’ll be jiggered” “well frog feathers” “That’s so ugly, it would make a freight train take a dirt road” among other things. If one of his kids or grandchildren asked him where he was going, he would reply “to see a dog about a man”.
Doyle is survived by His sister Sharon Hines, brother Doug (Debbie) Atchley, son Shane (Pam) Atchley, son Geoff (Lori) Atchley, Daughter Meda (Lorren) Britain. 7 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Doyle was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Ellen.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hope West Hospice.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
