Alice Yvonne Spika

Alice Yvonne (Wang) Spika passed on to eternal rest April 26, 2025 at the age of 88.

Alice was born on April 15, 1937, in Oblong, Illinois to Albert and Pearl Wang. At the age of four, her family moved west to Baker, Montana, where she grew up with one brother and one sister. In high school, Alice participated in choir, played clarinet in the band, and proudly served as a spunky baton-twirling majorette in the marching band.

After graduating from high school in 1955, Alice attended Business College in Rapid City, South Dakota, where she met Albert Spika, a B-36 airplane mechanic serving in the U.S. Air Force. They married on December 27, 1956. Over the years, Alice and Albert welcomed five children. They moved frequently due to Albert’s work with the Soil Conservation Service, before settling in Delta, Colorado, in 1975.

While raising her family, Alice worked at Garnet Mesa Elementary and later at Delta High School. She also found time for community fun as a member of the beloved "Sha No No" group, entertaining at special events throughout Delta County.

Alice’s artistic spirit shone brightly through her extraordinary sewing talents. Later in life, she assisted her daughter Sandi in crafting glamorous gowns for some of country music’s biggest stars, including Trisha Yearwood, Taylor Swift, and Reba McEntire. Her meticulous attention to detail and artistic vision were evident in every piece she created — from baby blankets and prom dresses to intricate wedding gowns, church banners, numerous quilts, Christmas stockings, and stunning stage costumes. Her beautiful work created these treasured pieces that wrapped loved ones in beauty, comfort, and joy.

Faith was a cornerstone of Alice’s life. Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith as a child, she remained an active member of Lutheran congregations wherever she lived, including All Saints Lutheran Church in Orchard City.

Alice is survived by her five children and spouses: Penny and Mike Rubala, Sandra and Scott Borchetta, Darci and Matt Hellman, Pamela Spika, and Trevor and Chelsea Spika; eleven grandchildren: Ian, Tyler, Megan, Seth, Dylan, Allexa, Kelsi, Austin, Greyson, Ariana, Ava; and 1 great-grandchild

A service celebrating Alice’s life will be held Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at New Life Community Christian Church, (Formerly All Saints Lutheran Church) located at 20101 Deer Creek Road, Orchard City, CO.
