Mary Lou (Fields) Wells Mary Lou (Fields) Wells, 85, of Austin died Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. (Fields) Wells, the youngest daughter of Charles Columbus Coleman and Esther Rhuama (Thomas) Coleman, was born April 3, 1936, in Paonia, CO. She spent her childhood in Paonia and Oak Creek, Colorado. Her high school years were spent at Olathe High School, Olathe, CO, Lodi Academy, Lodi, CA and Campion Academy, Loveland, CO., graduating from Campion Academy in 1954. After high school she taught school for a year in Hygine, CO., and a year in Grand Junction, CO. She met Harry ‘Hal’ Fields in Paonia, and they eloped to Carson City, NV., in 1957. They attended colleges in TN, TX, and CA before settling in Atwater, CA. In 1970 they moved back to Delta County, where she lived the rest of her life. They had six children together, and he proceeded her in death. She later married Thomas Lee Wells on September 1, 1991, in Paonia, CO. He had five surviving adult children at the time of their marriage whom she developed a close relationship with. Mr. Wells preceded her in death. Mrs. (Fields) Wells was a lifelong member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church holding a variety of volunteer positions. She enjoyed reading, flower gardening, houseplants, and sewing. She made hundreds of baby quilts that she donated to pregnancy resource centers in Delta and Montrose, CO., and Lubbock, TX. She also made and donated small quilts to a non-profit that sent blankets to third world countries to help children survive. Mrs. (Fields) Wells had a number of office positions over her career. She served as City and Police Chief Clerk in Cabazon, CA., before taking the position of bookkeeper at a cabinet shop in Atwater, CA. After moving to Delta she and ‘Hal’ Fields operated Willow Creek Enterprises for many years. Later she took a position doing retail sales and bookkeeping. However, the job she was proudest of was that of Wife, Mother, and Homemaker. Mrs. (Fields) Wells is survived two sons, Harold (Dawn) Fields of Shallowater, TX, and Jeff (Jill) Wells of Loudon, TN.; six daughters, Michele (Dale) Crawford of Shallowater, TX., Melissa (Wayne Allgeyer) Fields-Allgeyer of Levelland, TX., Phyllis (Dale) Conley of Grand Junction, CO, Ruth (LeRoy) Bott of Queen Creek, AZ., Barbara Wells of Ammon, ID, and Linda Scanlon of Pocatello, ID.; sister Carol Boyd of Austin, CO.; 19 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brother and six sisters, husband ‘Hal’ Fields, sons Rodney ‘Roddy’ Fields and Clark Fields, husband Thomas Wells, stepsons John Sterling and John Wells, and great granddaughter Anika Bott. Burial will take place in the Cedaredge Cemetery following a private family service. There will be a Celebration of Life next summer that all are invited to. Memorial Contributions may be made to the charity of your choice to benefit Women and Children.
